A group of colonists who are brought by John White in 1587 to a new colony at Roanoke off the Atlantic coast disappear during his absence in order to gather supplies for the long winter. The only signs of life left are the letters CRO carved into a tree and the word CROSTOAN carved into one of the fort's posts.
